Recap: Raheem DeVaughn, Chrisette Michelle and Dwele at Merriweather

Fabulously submitted by
DC Fab! Girl

Last Sunday, despite the rain scare and the daunting humidity, music lovers from all around the DMV gathered at Merriweather Post Pavilion, in my backyard. A perfect R&B concert; the much underappreciated opening act, Dwele warmed up the crowd.

I'll admit, I'm not a Dwele fan...but I do love his classic hit, "Find a Way", which he thankfully performed. I think everyone else was getting food during his set but his loyal fans sung his songs with him and bopped in their seats.

Guess who I spotted looking for his seat with...is this his wife that he always talks about? I don't know...but it is DMV native, David Vanterpool. That man is hard to miss. :) No disrespect to the misses.

(Photo: ? but looks like a basketball player and David Vanterpool looking for their seats inside the pavilion)

Finally, after a short intermission one of my favorites came on. I think I put half of y'all on to her...yes the lovely Chrisette Michelle. Much like her set when she performed at the 9:30 Club not too long ago, Chrisette opened with "Let's Rock" and pretty much performed much of her album. She talked about her upcoming album...we can't wait!!

She rocked a fabulous fitted, black, sparkly number, which looked more fitting for a jazz club that an outdoors pavilion, but she still looked good. I just know she was hot cuz I had on a see through tee and I just about died...

The one thing (among others) that I love about Chrisette is that she sounds even better live...her voice is such a nod to the classic voices that our momma's grew up with: Billy Holiday, Sarah Vaughn and the like. It's so refreshing to hear good vocals nowadays...ever since T-Pain and the attack of the Steinberg voice machine; good, clean vocals are definitely lacking in music.

After a few choice songs, Chrisette said "I love you" to a special someone(s) in the audience. Perhaps it was her parents who came down from the NY to see their baby girl.

And then the main act! I haven't seen Raheem DeVaughn perform since he performed at the University of Maryland fashion show...yeaaaaars ago and boy has he gotten some stage presence since then. Undoubtedly a performer who puts his all into what he does, the best thing about Raheem is that he focuses on creating an atmosphere of love, soul and music.

With his staple, Demont Peekaso painting in the background, Raheem mesmerized the crowd (well mostly the ladies) into a 'funky good time'.

(Photo: The infamous glasses that set it all off...don't get too mad SC)

Now when I said this boy has stage presence...he's got it. He puts his ALL into performing. Not only was he running, jumping, skipping and swimming...I think he did a lap around the pavilion (I definitely got strong armed by the security who dashed to keep up with him), he swung from the speakers, freaked the floor and even had his background singer come and do a James Brown and put a purple velvet cape on his back, which I thought was a bit ridiculous but the ladies loved it.

Here are some pics of Raheem 'going in':

(Photo: Doing acrobatics...)

(Photo: His nod to James Brown)

(Photo: Going all the way in...)

Despite Raheem's extra-ness, he still got me when he shouted out DC and played a go-go set, complete with someone on the bongos but then finished it off with a soul clap and a tribute to Baltimore Club music. It was a perfect DMV night...Raheem definitely brought a party atmosphere to Merriweather.

Afterward, Raheem and crew celebrated their manager's birthday at The Park at 14th (920 14th Street NW) in DC.

8.15 | OMG Fab | Anita Baker Comes to Baltimore!!!

Ok so myself and DC Fab! Girl are completely filled with glee at the thought of Anita Baker coming to Charm City!
So yes fab! fans, I know that I was only 5 when the album "Caught Up In the Rapture" came out but still...its ANITA BAKER. On Friday (8.15.08) @ 7pm, come down to the Pier Six Concert Pavilion to see Anita sing "I apologize....believe me...o believe me I do" (sorry got caught in the moment...) amongst her other millions of hits.
Tickets are kinda pricey at $75-125....its Anita tho...but still...Rapture came out in like 1989. Why are your tickets almost the same price as the "Heart of the City" tour with Jigga and Mary????

Anyhoo...click here to get more ticket info.
I love you Anita!!!

Sincerely two of your biggest fans,

RIP Fab | George Carlin Dies

This clearly has nothing to do with Baltimore except for a couple of comedy shows he may have done, but we here at TFE want to acknowledge the death of comedian, George Carlin. He was a legendary comedian who produced many HBO shows and was the first ever to host "Saturday Night Live." It is said he died of heart failure yesterday evening, which is crazy since he just performed in Las Vegas last weekend.
RIP George Carlin...I'm sure you will be missed.

6.22 | Maino @ Eden's Lounge

This is for all my NY'ers (and NY'ers to be like meeeee lol). Maino is steppin' through Bmore this Sunday (6.22.08) At Eden's Lounge. They are letting the first 92 haters in for free, so come join Konan, Lana, and the KIS Models as they "hustle hard...stack paper...you see me...HI HATERS!"
I can't lie...Maino aint really fab, but if you got that hood fab like me, you definitely appreciate this BK cat!

Take the Megabus for $1 from Baltimore to New York

Ok...so I gotta be honest. I didn't believe this when I first heard it, but I actually took it yesterday and YES fab! fans, its LEGIT! I bought my tickets for $2.50. $1 each way with a $.50 service charge. It picks you up at White Marsh Mall or at Metro Center in DC, and drops you directly infront of Penn Station in NY. Its much better than the Chinese bus that drops you in the middle of Chinatown where no one speaks english to tell you where to go. All you have to do is purchase your ticket in advance because prices vary depending on the date you plan on traveling. So basically tickets can range from $2.50- $30.50. You can find some tickets for $5, $8, $12, or $14 depending the day.

The only negative aspect is that the drivers drive slow so it took us about 5 hours to get to NY, and they blast the air conditioning so I felt like I was in the middle of a winter storm. BUT for $2.50, you better bring a blanket, a book, or sleep cause you can't beat this price.

I dunno how much longer they are gonna stay in service, but my suggestion is that you don't ask how and why. Just hop on the bus and enjoy the summer. The government is tryin' to kill us with these gas prices, but the Megabus is tryin' to bring back our spirit!

To check out what other cities Megabus has service, click here to see a news report and click here for the official Megabus website.

Megabus is mega fab!

p.s.- Supposedly there is another bus called the Bolt Bus for $1. I will report back after I take it.

Video Recap: Ayo and Kentavius Jones Perform at Rams Head

Fabulously submitted by DCFab! Girl

I traveled some 25 minutes outside of the District (gasp! I know) to hear some wonderful up and coming music. Ayo (her name means 'joy' in Yoruba so I felt like we connected lol) is already a popular artist overseas, particularly in France, but has begun letting us Americans know who she really is. Why is America late in getting all the hottest stuff...cell phones...fashion...music? :(

With a soulful voice as well as a spirit that truly shines (and I'm not even trying to be corny, it's true!), she brings a Euro-African synergy to the mic; Ayo is really out of this world. If you don't believe me, check out her hit single, "Down on my Knees" in the video clip below:

Did you notice that when she beats on her guitar it kinda' resembles an African drum? It's kinda hot...and it's the kind of rhythmic mix that makes Ayo refreshing to listen to.

I got a chance to sit down with Ayo before her sound check. In a candid interview, Ayo lets us know what makes her music so special and what inspires her to write the music that she does. We even got interrupted by an uninvited...fan (not fab...but funny).
Watch now:

I'm excited to see Ayo perform again this Friday at the 9:30 Club (815 V Street NW). If you missed her in Nap Town, check her out there! :)

...and I can't forget Kentavius Jones who opened for Ms. Ayo! KJ, as he's affectionately called, has the most charming personality that shines on stage as well as off. He chatted it up with patrons before and after his set, telling stories of his childhood and making jokes (some were funny lol). My friend sitting next to me said he reminded her of a soulful John Mayer and I couldn't agree more.

Watch him perform one of my favorites "Floor":

I'm luvin the instrumentation at the end.

Stay fab y'all :)

p.s. Shout out to Kayenecha of Gypsy Soul for hooking a soror up!

Congratulations to the BOSTON CELTICS!!!

Just wanted to take a brieft moment to congratulate the city of Boston on a tremendous win over the Lakers last night. Yall embarrassed them...so yes...enjoy this moment Boston. Prove to the world that yall dont just have the best baked beans...yall are NBA CHAMPIONS!!!

Check out my girl, BostonFab! for the scoop on the city's celebrations.

p.s.- Aiyyo...Rondo, call me boo :)

p.s.s.- KG, you were acting hood during your interview afta...I know you were excited but still...

Ayo and Kentavius Jones at Rams Head

Tuesday night great music is coming to Rams Head Tavern (33 West St, Annapolis). Ayo (her name means 'joy' in Yoruba), an established artist abroad is coming to this side of the pond to share her sound. If you love up and coming music, check out Ayo

Of German and Nigerian descent, her sound is incredibly unique...kind of a mix of soul, indie, rock...I don't know, just click on the link and find out for yourself! :)

Opening for her is MD native (and cutie), Kentavius Jones. With a style all his own (soul rock/indie/R&B), his biggest influences are a mix of Motown, B.B. King and Kanye -- and you can definitely feel each of them in his music, especially with his song "Floor". (Luv that!)

The show starts at 7 PM and tickets are $17.50...get them here! :)

Spotted | Jada Pinkett-Smith's Kids Looking A Mess

Though they weren't spotted in Bmore, you know I gotta keep you up to date on Bmore's homegirl, Jada.

Well...for Father's Day, the family decided to attend the Kit Kittredge: An American Girl in Hollywood. Please explain to me why Jada and Will have their kids looking totally unfab. None of them are looking cute.

p.s. The little girl just looks a mess. Enuff said. For the younger son, the hair was cute in The Pursuit of Happyness, but you're getting older so cut it. Please don't be like your older brother and twist it. He looks like he shoulda been part of the group 3T. (Remember them? OK I'm done...)

I still luv yall though...just make sure to have a talk with the kids next time about their appearance in public. Just remind them that only about 1 billion people will take notice :)

Happy 37th Birthday to Tupac Shakur

Today would have marked the 37th birthday of the late great Tupac. Though I am personally a Biggie fan, we at The Fab Empire don't discriminate so here's a special shout-out to all the Pac fans...

Happy BDAY Pac...."you are appreciated"

I'm listening to Jon B. & Tupac's "Are you Still Down"....(side note) where is Jon B????

Recap: "Jamaican Me Crazy" Fridays at Bay Cafe

Fabulously submitted by
Ashlee
Bmore Fab! Correspondent

Every now and then, I don't feel like getting all glammed up for a night out. Sometimes, it's nice to just chill. So this weekend I was in search of a place where I could go and have a great time in my flip flops but still listen to great music with a good drink in my hand.

A friend told me about Bay Cafe (2809 Boston St) on Fridays so being the great Bmore Fab! correspondent I am, I headed over there to see what it had to offer.

There was a $5 cover charge to get in, which isn't bad considering some places can cost up to $20 on a Friday night. With a dine-in restaurant accompanying a tiki bar, dance floor and tables outside, it of made it feel like I was somewhere other than Baltimore. There was a band that played reggae but there was also a DJ who played some of my favorite songs.

Bay Cafe has a great island feel (at least on Friday nights). They also have happy hour from 4-8 on Fridays, which is marvelous for those of us on budgets :) I would definitely suggest going here again for a chill night out on Baltimore's harbor!

6.14 | NFL Invasion @ Xanadu

Calling all groupies & football fans....
Tonight (6.14.08), Konan, Lana Rae, The KIS Models, and Jason Murphy of the Tennessee Titans host...NFL Invasion @ Xanadu (10 S. Calvert St). This is the afterparty for Jason Murphy's Holding the Line Community Football Camp, and they are claiming to bring 30+ NFL players to the spot (the groupies are screaming right now I'm sure...)
But in all seriousness, this event is for a good cause since a portion of the profits will be donated to the Holding The Line Charity Foundation.
Sounds pretty fab to me, so stop thru!

6.14 | DJ P-Drama's Birthday Bash @ The Den

So one of my favorite DJ P-Drama (QB standdd uppp!!) is celebrating his birthday tonight (6.14.08) at The Den (3327 St. Paul St). And check this...the name of the party is "Hi Haterz" (you see me...lol...Maino is killin it in BK right now).

Ladies, you already know you must look fly and fellas, throw your collared shirt on. This event is 21+ so the kiddies MUST stay home.

You might see TheFab in the building so definitely come thru and celebrate with one of Bmore's finest!

Mini Recap | NBA Finals Game 4 at Champs Bar & Grill

Fabulously submitted by DCFab! Girl

It is me and my best friend's favorite place to chill and not be seen. That's right...NOT be seen. Champ's Sports Bar and Grill (6600 Baltimore National Pike, Catonsville) is not your average hole-in-the-wall but a hole it is nonetheless.

If you like to chill with the locals sometimes go to Champ's, which is right beside the Toys R Us and the Panera Bread. I luv this place! The bartenders are mad friendly (it's so weird...they always have on wife beaters...is that the dress code?) and the people are even friendlier.

Last night, we headed here and ordered our favs, the Call a Cabs. No, they're not like the ones in Miami but they're even better! :)

The Lakers lost last night...I'm kind of indifferent...but does anyone else think that Lamar Odom looks like Tommy from Martin?!?

Let a sista' know! :)

p.s. On Thursday night's a DJ gets it poppin' in Champs. He played all my favorites last night!!!

Club Fab: Horsemen's Shorty Got...

If you've been a club hopper since birth like I was then you've probably heard of the Horsemen. I discovered them at the Dox and Hammerjacks...anyway they sent me this video so I'm putting it up. Much love to the Horsemen (Frankie Baby, Nigga Say What)...

I don't know if it's fab but...it's Bmore! :)

Recap | Jazzy Summer Nights featuring Bilal

Fabulously submitted by Ashlee
BmoreFab! Correspondent

By the time we got to Jazzy Summer Nights, Bilal was just making it on stage so I have no idea who performed before or after him. But Hopkins Plaza was full of people with lawn chairs and open containers. It seemed like one big, Baltimore cookout with somebody knowing somebody who knew someone else.

It was little too hot outside for me, but if outdoor concerts are your sort of thing, I definitely suggest you check it out...especially since it's free. Girls couldn't wait to pull out their summer dresses and shorts and the men didn't mind! They also had vendors selling merchandise so you might be able to do a little shopping while you're there. My only suggestion is that they have some kind of security check point...I was a little worried :)

Anyway, Jazzy Summer Nights are the first Thursday of every month in Hopkins Plaza (near Baltimore and Charles Streets...I'm sure you will see people walking in that direction).

For more information, click here. Aight yall...remember to stay fab!

6.7 | Baltimore NPHC Greek Picnic

So you know this is greek picnic season. DC Greek last weekend...so of course its Bmore's turn. Come join the Bmore Greek community this Saturday (6.7.08) from 2p-8p at the Woodlawn Memorial Park (1936 Woodlawn Dr.). Come out for games, food, strolling, and all that other stuff us Greeks do when we get together.
So I'm calling all my sorors & bruhs to the park...but I'm requesting that the Sigmas bring the Blue juice (not for me tho of course lol)

6.5 | Ray Lewis Summer Days Kickoff Party

This Thursday (6.5.08), Ray Lewis Foundation in association with E.O. Entertainment Present Ray's Summer Days Weekend Kickoff Party @ Havana Club (600 Water St. above the Ruth Chris). Doors open at 10pm and our fav Quick Quick aka DJ Quicksilva will be on the 1's and 2's. This is a Ray Lewis Party so attire is celeb status.

Dunno what celeb status is? Lemme explain: if you look in your closet, pick out an outfit, and have to wonder if its ok, its probably NOT. Now if you look in your closet and your outfit screams "I'm gonna turn heads," then that might be the one....or you're a groupie. Either way, make sure your outfit is fly.

Alright yall...come kick off the summer right!

Bow Wow @ Rams Head Live!

Verizon VIP Tours Present...Lil Bow Wow (sorry...he was lil' when he came out. You can't just decide to change your name cuz your voiced changed).
But yes, Bow Wow will be in concert on Tuesday (7.29.08) at Rams Head Live! (20 Market Place) at 7pm. Tickets go on sale this Saturday (6.7.08) at 10am so if you're one of Bow Wow's groupies (shout-out to my BFF Tracy lol), then you may wanna be in line early.

Apparently he is on his H.I.M. tour. Did anyone know he was on tour? Check out ATLFab! to see what else Bow Wow is up to and click here for ticket info.

And....don't forget where you heard it first! (TFE of course!!!)

Jill Scott Presale Tickets!!

Jilly from Philly is back promoting her third album, "The Real Thing: Words and Sounds Vol.3". I'm in luv with this album...simply because of the song Crown Royal. (Side note: I tried to get bold and order that last Saturday at the club...big mistake...it was a waste of money. The song sounds good but the drink is NASTY!)

Joining her on tour is The Roots, DC's own Chuck Brown and another one of my international fav's Estelle. The show will be at Merriweather Post Pavilion on August 2.

Get your presale tickets today from 10 AM - 11:59 PM. The Password is realthing. Click here to get em!

You're welcome :)

6.5 | 1st Thursdays @ PUR

Recap: Making the Band 4 Concert at Pier Six

Fabulously submitted by DCFab! Girl

My sister surprised me with tickets to the Making the Band 4 Tour, which started off pretty rocky due to the fact that some shows were cancelled due to lack of ticket sales. I was a little worried they would cancel Baltimore but I'm glad they didn't...

(Photo: Too many empty seats in Pier Six where the concert was held)

The concert was scheduled to start at 7 PM but the first act, Cheri Dennis (she don't ever get no shine...I think I'm her only fan...ever since she made that song "So Complete") didn't go on until 7:45 PM because apparently nobody was in the audience. We didn't stroll in until around 8 PM where everybody was boppin' in their seats. No one got up for Cheri until she performed her hit single, "I Love You". The couple behind me had the nerrrrrrve to ask me could I sit down because they couldn't see...um. No, stand up. Thanks.

After a brief intermission, I say brief because the concert was quite cheap. There was no set changes, no real DJ (push button DJ for sure), no budget probably...so anyway after a brief intermission Donnie comes out to tons of screaming fans.

(Photo: Donnie singing songs that we don't know)

I'm sorry Donnie but I'm not a fan. I'm not of fan of you and all that make up you had caked on and I'm not a fan of your background dancers and their too tight pants...one of them had a muffin top...and I'm definitely not a fan of you telling us to sing along knowing that you haven't dropped any singles! Stop it Donnie. Stop it.

After another too brief intermission, my boys came out: Day 26!!!! Yes, I was a fan before but after Donnie's boring performance Day 26 revived the stage. They came out looking sharp (as a tac) in those three piece suits that they wore on their album cover...Mike looks like he gained weight and I want Brian to take those cornrows out so bad but other than that, you know Q and Will were bringing the sexy. Robert you gets no love ever since those pics surfaced on Facebook when you proposed to your girl Junebug. Boo on you.

The one thing Day 26 shouldn't have done was taken off those nice suits to put on what they thought was cute...it's clear that their stylist was either sleep or nonexistent. After the suits, they all came out lookin' like they got their outfits from Security. Will had on this leather vest (ew) and Q had the nerve to have on the shiniest patent leather jacket...he nearly blinded me. Diddy, come get your boys!

Then my girls came out...two claps for Danity Kane! Their album is named "Welcome to the Dollhouse" and DK didn't hold back with continuing the theme...they came out in black and white baby doll dresses. My sister liked them...I didn't care for them that much.

Danity Kane performed their new and old hit, including my favorites like Show Stopper, Damaged, Pretty Boy and Right Now. The girls have come a long way and really looked like seasoned professionals as far as their performance goes. The crowd interaction was great; they sounded great (although some songs were obviously being lip synched) and almost looked great.

Let me tell you about Aubrey's hair...she was definitely Auberella that night...it looked like hot trash...with blond weave on top of more blond weave. Aundrea had too much weave in her hair too...she looked like a little bobble head doll.

(Photo: Aubrey and her horrible weave)

(Photo: Dawn sounded and performed the best...too bad by the end of the show her weave looked old, tangled and didn't seem to cooperate with the rest of her natural hair. Diddy, we need a stylist!!!)

(Photo: And why hasn't Diddy told "D Woods" that this isn't the look for her...for anybody really)

(Photo: Surprisingly, Shannon looked the best...and her hair stayed on point for the entire set)

The show ended by 9:30, which is pretty early considering it didn't start until 7:45 and there were how many acts? Oh well...it was good while it lasted. Afterwards, we went to get some grub at one of my fav restaurants Houlihans...we left the Hans and Day 26 and Danity Kane (and I'm sure Donnie and Cheri) were still at Pier Six greeting and taking pictures with fans...I know because we heard the screams while leaving the restaurant.

Day 26 partied at Club One afterward...read recap here.
